The Rural Secretariat Region of Labrador is one of nine regions in the province. The Labrador Regional Council was established in the fall of 2005, and currently has 10 members with varying backgrounds and interest from larger and smaller communities throughout the region. The Council meets four times a year and is supported by a Regional Partnership Planner, Lisa Densmore and the regional office is located in Goose Bay.
The Labrador region is approximately 295,000 square kilometers, and is geographically is the largest of the nine Rural Secretariat Regions. The region has 32 communities with a total population of approximately 26,400 (according to Census 2006 data). The region has two hospitals located in our larger centres; one in Goose Bay and one in Labrador West. Many of our communities are accessible only by boat and plane.
Labrador is rich in raw resources and has potential for development in many areas with mining, hydro and aerospace as very large scale opportunities happening now and continuing to grow. The land offers countless enjoyment for fishing, hunting, berry picking and sports. The Labrador regional council is aware of all the opportunities our region has to offer and will be working hard on building on these strengths in the years to come. Each council member is dedicated to Labrador and proud to live and work here. Many of them spend time volunteering in our communities and know the challenges we face.
