Gander - New-Wes-Valley

Regional Overview

The Gander – New Wes Valley Region of the Rural Secretariat spans from Terra Nova National Park in the East to Lewisporte in the West and includes a hundred plus costal communities in between. The 2006 population for the region was approximately 46 900. Gander, the largest service town in the region, accounts for approximately 20% of the regions population. The remainder of the region consists of clusters of towns or sub-regions that provide some private and public services and has some economic base. These sub-regions usually consist of a larger municipality (populations 1000 – 4000) and numerous smaller communities and municipalities (population < 1000). The larger municipalities within these sub-regions include; Twillingate, Fogo, Lewisporte, Gambo, Glovertown, and New Wes Valley. Also included within the region are three inhabited islands accessible only by ferry – St. Brendan’s, Change Islands and Fogo Island.

Following an open nomination process, a Regional Council was established and presently consists of nine members with varying backgrounds and interest from larger and smaller communities throughout the region. The Council meets at least four times a year and is supported by a Regional Partnership Planner, Tanya Noble, whose regional office is located in New Wes Valley.
