Regional Overview |
 |
The Rural Secretariat Region of Labrador is one of nine regions in the province. It has one Regional Partnership Planner and a Regional Council of 12 volunteer members.
Following an open nomination process, the Council was established in the fall of 2005, consisting of people with varying backgrounds and interest from larger and smaller communities throughout the region.
The region is approximately 295,000 square kilometers with 32 communities and 28,600 people, the largest of the nine regions. We have two hospitals located in our larger centres; one in Goose Bay and one in Labrador West. Many of our communities are accessible only by boat and plane. People living in our 30 smaller communities generally go to Goose Bay for services. (For Community Accounts data Click here)
Labrador is rich in raw resources and has potential for development in many areas with mining, hydro and aerospace as very large scale opportunities happening now and continuing to grow. The land offers countless enjoyment for fishing, hunting, berry picking and sports. The cross country ski trails in Labrador West and Goose Bay are world class and offer family fun all winter long. The ski-doo trails are groomed offering a smooth ride for the outdoor enthusiast. We have long winters to enjoy but summer is no less fun in our communities. Hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking are just outside our door step.
The Labrador regional council is aware of all the opportunities our region has to offer and will be working hard on building on these strengths in the years to come. Each council member is dedicated to Labrador and proud to live and work here. Many of them spend time volunteering in our communities and know the challenges we face.
The council meets four times a year, is chaired by Sonya Belben, Forteau and the Provincial Representative is Diane Gear, Labrador West. The Provincial Council meets twice a year with Cabinet. It is through these mechanisms put in place by government that we will carry out our mandate.
