Commission releases details on
first public hearings and emphasizes the importance of public input

The Royal Commission on Renewing and Strengthening Our Place in Canada today released information on its first week of public hearings and their locations.

"The public has a vital role to play in deciding the future of our province," said Commission Chair Vic Young. "The process is, after all, about their creativity in helping us develop a blueprint for a prosperous and self-reliant Newfoundland and Labrador. We want to talk with as many women, men and young people as possible about our place in Canada, and about the special and unique contributions we have made to Canada.

"While formal presentations are welcomed and encouraged, we don’t intend to have them read into the record at the hearings. The use of artistic expression, such as poems and songs, is also encouraged. For those who cannot attend, we ask that they send us a written submission via mail, fax or e-mail before December 16, 2002."

All public hearings will begin with a meet and greet at 6:30 p.m., followed by the hearing at 7:00 p.m. The first week’s venues and locations are:

Monday, September 30 Lions Club, Harbour Breton
Tuesday, October 1 Mount Peyton Hotel, Grand Falls-Windsor
Wednesday, October 2 Albatross Hotel, Gander
Thursday, October 3 Waterfront Premises (theatre), Barbour Living Heritage Village, Newtown, New Wes Valley

To encourage and support discussion by the public, the commission’s consultation document, research and consultation plan and backgrounders were released on September 4, 2002. All documents are available on the commission’s Web site at www.gov.nf.ca/royalcomm, or by calling (709) 729-3200.

The Royal Commission on Renewing and Strengthening Our Place in Canada was announced in March 2002, followed by the appointments of commissioners Vic Young (Chair), Sister Elizabeth Davis and Judge James Igloliorte in April. The Royal Commission will file its final report by June 30, 2003.
