Policy Statement

Employees are entitled to paid holidays.

Application

This policy applies to all employees. Bargaining unit employees should also consult their respective collective agreements.

Definitions

*Day of rest*	a day when an employee is not ordinarily required to work, other than a designated holiday or day when the employee is on leave of absence
*Paid Holiday*	a holiday designated by the Employer

Responsibility

Department

It is the responsibility of individual departments to inform employees of the schedule of designated paid holidays.

Designated Holidays

Employees are entitled to be paid for 14 designated holidays a year. The schedule of designated holidays rests solely with the Employer or as prescribed by collective agreement.

St. Patrick's Day
Good Friday
St. George's Day
Victoria (Commonwealth) Day
Discovery Day
Memorial Day
Orangemen's Day
Labour Day
Thanksgiving Day
Armistice (Remembrance) Day
Christmas Day
Boxing Day
one civic holiday, at a time to be determined by the Employer, in the area in which employees reside

Hospital and institutional support staff may be given 5 extra days paid leave when they are awarded 9 designated holidays. The schedule of designated holidays rests solely with the Employer or as prescribed by collective agreement.

Compensation for Holidays

At the Employer's discretion, employees may be required to work on any or all holidays. The following table outlines compensation for such events:

Is the designated holiday the employees day of rest?	Is the employee scheduled to work on the designated holiday?	Is the employee not scheduled but required to work by the Employer?	Compensation for the holiday in addition to the employees regular pay:	If time off is not granted, payment must be made to the employee within:
yes	no	no	1 day off in lieu of the holiday	2 months of the scheduled holiday
no	yes	no	time off at a rate of 1 1/2 hours for each hour worked	4 months of the scheduled holiday
yes	no	yes	time off at a rate of double time plus 1 day off in lieu of the holiday	2 months of the scheduled holiday
