The Office of Employment Equity for Persons with Disabilities offers an employment initiative that provides wage subsidies to Agencies, Boards, Commissions and Crown Corporations that hire persons with disabilities in positions related to their education and training.
Many persons with disabilities do not possess the work experience necessary to be competitive in the labour market. They have completed post-secondary training but, due to their lack of job experience, are unable to secure employment related to their field of study. The purpose of these work assignment opportunities is to provide persons with disabilities the training-related, on-the-job, mentorship work experience that will make them more competitive in the labour market.
To ensure participants of this initiative obtain what will be viewed by future potential employers as “significant work experience,” contractual work assignment opportunities must be a minimum of six months, after which time extensions can be negotiated. It would also be expected that the employing organization will enable employees to avail of internal job opportunities, offer training opportunities normally offered to all other employees, and provide support to encourage career development.
Participants are paid based on a classification determined by your description of the duties and responsibilities of the position and of the knowledge, abilities, and education you indicate as being required to perform the work. Wage subsidies are negotiated on an individual basis. This program is intended to be an additional resource for Agencies, Boards, Commissions and Crown Corporations and is not meant to replace an existing position. Union approval for positions, if necessary, will be the responsibility of the employing organization.
To participate in this initiative, provincial managers must submit an
Agencies, Boards, Commissions and Crown Corporations Contractual Proposal Form
(67 KB). The proposal must be signed off by the department’s Director of Human Resources and Chief Executive Officer/ Designate prior to submission to our Office.
