Nolan Young, Transportation and
Works
Nolan
Young is a heavy equipment technician with the Department of
Transportation and Works in Deer Lake.
A few years ago, the department purchased computerized spreader
control systems for snow-clearing trucks. The systems enabled
operators to regulate the flow of salt and sand to the road surface
while simultaneously creating a computerized record of material
usage.
Nolan was one of the technicians responsible for the installation of
these computerized spreader control systems. During this time, he
developed a keen interest in the systems and excelled in their
installation.
Later the department decided to offer an in-house training package
for the western region related to the computerized spreader control
systems they had purchased. The obvious person to turn to was Nolan
who immediately agreed to design and deliver the training.
Nolan took ownership of the project and showed great creativity in
developing a six-hour training seminar on the theory and application
of spreader control systems.
The training was so successful it was offered across the province.
All feedback from the participants was positive. The fact that Nolan
was teaching his peers made everyone much more comfortable. He
showed a high degree of expertise and listened intently to others
experiences and questions.
Nolan showed interest and initiative far beyond his own job
requirements by conducting these training seminars throughout the
province and was instrumental in making the computerized spreader
control systems a success.
